Band Bio's
Foster Willey Jr ..... Harmonica, Lead Vocals
Foster has been the band leader of Terraplane since its inception in 1995. After years of listening to blues giants Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, and Paul Butterfeild, he began his musical training studying at the West Bank School of Music. He has studied with local jazz harp virtuoso Clint Hoover and blues great Curtis Blake, as well as vocalist Vicki Mountain at Mcphail. More recently, he has studied with jazz stand out Paul Renz. He worked in a number of bands before taking over as frontman for Terraplane.

Terraplane's new CD, Bound by Love , reflects a culmination of the past eight years performing on the local music scene. Faithfully embracing the roots of the urban blues, this effort also has a very contemporary dimension which reflects modern concerns for the music. The CD contains a number of original tunes penned by Foster and band mate Mark Vandermyde. Bound by Love is on the Cold Wind Label and will be available at the Electric Fetus, Cheapo's, and Best Buy.

Pursuing his other creative ambitions as a visual artist and sculptor, Foster also maintains a studio in NE Minneapolis creating original works of art for commission and sale.

Dave Hofgren ..... Guitar
Dave has been playing professionally for the past seventeen years. Self taught, he has played in a number of Blues, Rock and Variety groups. These beginnings led to an interest in the field of jazz, the rigors of which have served to formalize his musicality. His influences have been on the periphery of the blues genre including jazzer Scott Henderson, the eccentric Frank Zappa, and local legend Willie Murphy, contributing to his original style. Dave currently plays in several successful groups including: Terraplane, The Steely Band (A 12 piece presenting the music of Steely Dan), Cornbread Harris and Friends, NightHawk and The Paul Cherba Jazz Quartet. Musical idols include: Monk, Duke, Bird, Miles, Coltrane, Cannonball, Wes Sco', Satchmo, The Count, Diz, Fagan Becker, Trower, Page and Mike Stern. While music has always been a great source of fulfillment and focus of passion, Dave also works as a full-time arborist, recently starting his own tree service, Nightingale Arboraculture.

Mark Vandermyde ..... Keyboard, B3 Organ
Mark is a classically-trained pianist and organist, composer/arranger and also a 3-time finalist in the Minnesota Music Teachers Association (MMTA) State Amateur Competition. Mark has been a member of various jazz and stage bands throughout high school and college. Studying music theory and composition at Harvard University, Mark is currently an organist and choir director at various Twin Cities area churches and played keyboard for Twin Cities blues bands Code Blue, Blue Heat, and the jazz combo Just Friends (with members of the Curbfeelers). Mark also works as a freelance pianist at various Twin Cities functions and locales. His musical influences include: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jack McDuff, Jay McShann, Charles Brown, James P. Johnson.

Jon D. Donovan ..... Bass
Jon attended Wayne State University as a music major and has been playing bass for 37 years. Jon has played with such blues greats as Mojo Buford, Francis Clay, Lucille Span, Shirley Brown, Linwood Slim and has jammed with Albert Collins, James Colton, and jazz greats: Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton, Big Bob Snyder, Carol Lee, and rock and rollers: Chuck Berry, Gary Puckett, Freddie Cannon. Jon has appeared at Harraks, MGM Grand, New York New York, Santa Fe, Stardust, Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, and Caesar's Palace in Atlantic City as well as having various recording dates in and about the country. He has also toured with the Broadway show, 1940's Radio Show.

Rey Rivera ..... Drums, Percussion
Rey Rivera has performed and recorded with a virtual who's who from the world of Jazz, Latin and R&B music as well as with his own acclaimed ensemble ZAFRA. His diverse experience includes work with such luminaries as Pee Wee Elias of James Brown, Chet Catallo of Sypra Gyra, Jeff Jarvis, Patato, Franke Malabe, Eddie (gua-gua) Rivera, Ramito, Los Condes, Bob Weiner, Bobby Mantello and Miguelito Valdes. A graduate of the Hochstein Music School, Rey also studied at the Eastman Conservatory of Music and took lessons at the Conservatory of Music in Puerto Rico. Rey received a Music Certificate from the University of Mantanza de Cuba for Folkloric Percussion under the study of Alphonso Dejesus of the Muinequitos de Matanza. He has also toured with off Broadway shows and circuses and continues to do music workshops for children and adults.

CD Review

Foster Willey and Terraplane have been cultivating their aggressive urban blues sound in the Twin Cities for quite a few years. On this debut CD, all the hours of gigging have paid off and its been worth the wait. Bound by Love sizzles with spontaneous energy and crispness that only a team of high powered professionals working together can express.

Foster Willey is the guiding light of Terraplane. I have watched his confidence and skills develop until now he is a force to be reckoned with. Foster has a keen sense of how to keep one foot deeply rooted in the blue's tradition while being open to fresh ideas. On this CD he clearly demonstrates this in all aspects of his playing, writing, arrangements, choice of players, covers, and recording studio.

Besides the impeccable ensemble playing and across the board great soloists, Bound by Love has something else going for it that truly sets it apart. The CD boasts an impressive number of well crafted and extremely listenable original tunes penned by Foster Willey and Mark Vandermyde. From the full tilt rocking title track to the sensitive and soulful ballad "She Takes My Love," they demonstrate a surprising breadth of songwriting talent. This is not just another rhythm & brews bar band playing the same old covers.

This is an impressive debut effort that sparkles with vitality. Lets hope its the first of many more.
~Clint Hoover (Harmonica Virtuoso)
